Ask, Seek, Knock… He Is Mighty

What is conviction?

Almost everyone, at one point or another, has experienced that moment when God gently taps us on the shoulder. Whether it's a quiet conviction or a clear opportunity to change, we’ve felt that internal nudge. While we shouldn't dwell on our mistakes to the point of paralysis, we also shouldn’t ignore the conviction God places on our hearts.

Some people think that sin is always followed by something "bad," as if consequences are the proof. From mild discomfort to serious events, like the death of Ananias in Acts 5, or the warning about blaspheming the Holy Spirit in Matthew 12:31; some use consequence as a kind of spiritual thermometer. If nothing happens, the thinking goes, then maybe God isn't too concerned. But that mindset misses a deeper truth.

Sin is not judged on a human sliding scale. We tend to think of some sins as minor and others as severe, but in God’s eyes, sin is sin. From stealing a piece of gum to committing murder, all sin separates us from God and requires atonement. James 2:10 (KJV) says, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” The ESV echoes this: “For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.”

We also wrestle with the idea of the "sin and forgiveness loop." We know that through salvation and the gift God has given us, we are forgiven. 1 John 1:9 (ESV) reminds us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” But this isn’t a license to indulge in sin with the intent to just ask for forgiveness afterward. Romans 6:1–2 (NIV) addresses this directly: “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”

God knows the heart. He knows what we’ve done, what we are doing, and what we will do. Psalm 139:1–4 (KJV) says, “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.” Nothing is hidden from Him. You cannot surprise God, and there is no place where He cannot find you.

When we treat God like someone who can be manipulated with good intentions or clever justifications, we diminish His holiness. Hebrews 4:13 (ESV) says, “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

So why are we afraid to talk to Him? He already knows. He knows where you’ve fallen, where you struggle, and whether your desire to change is real or just for show. Isaiah 1:18 (NIV) says, “Come now, let us settle the matter... Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” God is not waiting to condemn you. He is ready to redeem you, but He wants honesty, not performance.
