Ask, Seek, Knock… He Is Mighty

Comprehending the magnitude of God

We often try to define God with the best words we have, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, but even these grand concepts only scratch the surface of who He is. Our human understanding has limits, and even though we may believe God is everywhere, knows everything, and can do anything, we still struggle to grasp the fullness of what that truly means. Scripture tells us in 1 John 3:20 (KJV), “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.” The Amplified Bible (AMP) expands on this: “Whenever our heart convicts us [in guilt]; for God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things [nothing is hidden from Him because we are in His hands].” We can take comfort in the fact that God’s knowledge is not just vast, it’s personal. He knows not only all things but also each of us deeply.

We think in time-bound, physical terms, we live moment to moment, and our understanding is based on cause and effect, past and future. But God operates outside of those limitations. He is present in all time, all space, and every moment. Psalm 139:7–10 (ESV) says, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” God is not limited by geography, time, or even our understanding. He was with us yesterday, is with us now, and will be with us forever, not as separate moments, but all at once.

When we say God is all-powerful, we often affirm it with our mouths but hesitate with our hearts. Our experiences with human limitation can lead us to unintentionally project those limits onto God. Yet the Bible consistently reminds us that nothing is too hard for Him. In Jeremiah 32:17 (NIV), the prophet declares, “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” Jesus reiterates this in Matthew 19:26 (KJV): “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” If we truly believed in His limitless power, our prayers would reflect that, we would ask for miracles not with doubt, but with confidence.

And yet, God also works through people. Sometimes the answers to our prayers come not from a supernatural sign but from someone He sends. When others offer help, we must recognize the hand of God in their generosity. James 1:17 (ESV) reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” And just as we receive, we are also called to give. Jesus teaches in Luke 6:38 (NIV), “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.”This includes extending grace and charity even to those we think are unworthy, because God's grace certainly extended to us when we were undeserving.

Ultimately, our finite minds will never be able to contain the infinite nature of God. Romans 11:33 (AMP) puts it beautifully: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and decisions and how unfathomable and untraceable are His ways!” While we may never fully comprehend Him, we can fully trust Him. Our role is not to figure God out, but to follow Him in faith, knowing that even when we don’t understand, He is always good, always present, and always in control. we afraid to talk to Him? He already knows. He knows where you’ve fallen, where you struggle, and whether your desire to change is real or just for show. Isaiah 1:18 (NIV) says, “Come now, let us settle the matter... Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” God is not waiting to condemn you. He is ready to redeem you, but He wants honesty, not performance.
